Lucy Toprakjian MurphyLucy Toprakjian Murphy was born in Aleppo, Syria. The daughter of Hrant and Mary, she grew up in a home that valued education, resilience, and cultural identity. She received her schooling at the Cilician Armenian School and later at the Lazar Najarin-Calouste Gulbenkian School in Aleppo. During her high school years, her Armenian language teacher encouraged her to write poetry.Lucy pursued higher education in Beirut and later in California, where she continued her academic journey while working in Armenian community institutions. She served as an educator, school principal, cultural organizer, and active member of several Armenian organizations, including the Armenian Relief Society and the Tekeyan Cultural Association. She was also deeply involved in establishing Armenian institutions in Orange County, California.A devoted wife, mother of four, grandmother of fourteen, and lifelong community advocate, Lucy experienced both profound love and heartbreaking loss. After losing her husband, Krikor Toprakjian, following a long illness, she raised her family with strength and determination while building a successful career as a real estate broker. Later, she remarried Lloyd Thomas Murphy, who has supported her literary voice and her continued commitment to Armenian heritage and philanthropy.Writing has been Lucy's lifelong spiritual refuge. Her poetry, originally shared within the Armenian community, reflects lived experience-love, migration, resilience, faith, family, and memory.
