Sandalio is a researcher with wide experience in the field of biochemistry and physiology of abiotic stress in plants, including heavy metal stress, salinity, herbicides and senescence processes. She is the head of the research group “ignaling by oxygen and nitrogen reactive species under stress conditions in plants and of the Excellence Group of the same name under the auspices of the Junta de Andalucia in the Department of Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology of Plants in the Estación Experimental del Zaidín, CSIC, Granada, Spain. Her work has pioneered the study of different sources of superoxide radicals in plant peroxisomes and the presence in these organelles of a complex set of antioxidants.
