Melisa MelMELISA MEL continues to use her work, publications, and philanthropy in her constant efforts to help bridge the gaps of understanding that relate to vulnerable populations. Her accomplishments as an author, trainer, keynote speaker, educator, and CEOPresident of From Victim to Survivor, LLC are nationally known. During her years spearheading an LGBT club in the public school system, Melisa Mel was the only educator that was publicly "out" in her area at the time. It was a small rural community. The community had many mixed emotions about her being gay. Some people were extremely encouraging and open-minded. However, others publicly attacked Melisa Mel in nasty emails and letters in the local paper. Melisa Mel faced these attacks with dignity. Melisa Mel felt that it was important to be "out" so that the community could see that she was no different from anybody else. She especially felt this was important so that she could be a positive role model to the youth she worked with in her club. Realizing that no matter where one goes, there are "haters", her message was always loud and clear through her words and actions - "Although we cannot control how the "haters" act or think, we can certainly choose how we handle their misplaced hatred."
