Michael FriedMichael Fried, a leading art historian and critic, was born in New York. He first became known for his writings on abstract painting and sculture; his books on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century French painting and on Thomas Eakins and Stephen Crane,including Realism, Writing, Disfiguration and Absorption and Theatricality, are recognized as major accomplishments.
