Muhammad HallajBorn in 1932 in mandated Palestine, Muhammadcame to the U.S. for education. He earned aPh.D. from the University of Florida. He taught atJacksonville University in Florida and the Universityof Jordan before moving to Birzeit University in theOccupiedWest Bank as professor, then dean, then Vice-President for Academic Affairs. He wasthe first Director of the Council for HigherEducation in the West Bank and Gaza. In 1983, after a sabbatical as Visiting Scholar at HarvardUniversity, he was barred by Israeli authoritiesfrom returning to his homeland. He settled in theU.S. working on behalf of Palestine.
