He was the outdoors features writer and editor for the San Francisco Chronicle for more than 20 years, covering trends and issues in outdoor sport and resource use, as well as producing front-page investigations. His work has also been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, and The Mercury News.
