Voakes served on the faculty of the School of Journalism at Indiana Univerity from 1994 to 2003, when he became dean of School of Journalism & Mass Communication at Colorado. He is a co-author of The American Journalist in the 21st Century: U.S. News People at the Dawn of a New Millennium and Working with Numbers and Statistics: A Handbook for Journalists.
