Rachel ShanklesMary Rachel (Johnston) Shankles was born in Newport, Arkansas, in 1948 and graduated with the NHS Class' of 66. Rachel, as she has been called since college days, has a vivid memory of her escapades with her sister Cindy (Johnston) Sweat and the neigborhood on McLain Street, childhood friends, classmates at East Newport School, the Blue Bridge over the White River, small town life, and Headlee's Rexall Drug Store, where her dad worked. Author Rachel Shankles is a life-long educator who retired in 2013 after 42 years in public education as a senior high English teacher and library media specialist. She has been a storyteller and writer since seventh grade with poetry published first then articles and later as column editor for two educational journals. Her first book by Yorkshire Publishing was Triple S Farm Adventures: Hawkie's in Trouble, which was co-authored by two of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is the first in a series of farm mysteries about her farm in Bismarck, Arkansas, where she now resides in a hundred year old farmhouse with her husband. They share four grown children and a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren who love to roam the farm. Rachel now teaches as an adjunct faculty member in the Leadership Studies Department at the University of Central Arkansas. She enjoys traveling with her daughters, volunteering with her church and with Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary organization of female educators.
