Epstein received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in mathematics and then studied philosophy in Wellington, New Zeland and later with Benson Mates at Berkeley. He has been a Fulbright Fellow to Brazil and a National Acdemy of Sciences Scholar to Poland. He has written books on propositional logics, computability, and predicate logic.
