He graduatedfrom the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in Economics and is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the Economics Honor Society. Calkins spent nine years in the Air National Guard and was trained in electronics and radar systems at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi, graduating as the Honor Graduate of his class.
