Rick Bastrup
Rick Bastrup, President of R & R Creative Amusement Designs, Inc. is a writer, designer, art director, musician, producer, and project manager. Over the last 40 years his company has designed and produced some of the most innovative and iconic rids, parks, and attractions in the theme park business. Always a designer by heart, Rick had a number of careers before meeting his business partner, Richard Ferrin, and going into the amusement design business full-time. Rick was a professional musician, Anaheim police officer, college instructor, and Assistant Security Director at both the Disneyland Hotel and Knott's Berry Farm.
Rick's love of music, performing, and designing entertainment started as a teenager when he taught himself to play electric guitar, bass, keyboards, trumpet, sax, drums, and vocals. He and Richard, who plays sax and keyboards, still perform regularly with their band, "The Nocturnes," playing classics from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. His surf instrumental record album recorded in the 60s, "The Avengers VI, Real Cool Hits," is still popular and sold today. Rick still serves the community as an Anaheim PD Reserve Officer, working as a detective in the Family Protection Detail that specializes in domestic violence, stalking, and battered women cases.
Pulling all these backgrounds and experiences together, Rick and Richard taught themselves theme park design and built a company that has designed over 140 major projects--and still continues today! From dark rides to themed roller coasters to some of the first waterparks, Rick has been in the forefront of themed entertainment and is widely known in the industry as a legend in the history of theme park design.
