Robert E. Burns
Robert E. Burns (1927-2010) earned a master’s degree in history from Harvard University in 1953 and came to the University of Notre Dame in 1957 without previous exposure to Catholic education or commitment to it. He earned a doctoral degree in hitory from Harvard in 1961 and remained at Notre Dame for 39 years, serving as a teacher, working historian, and administrator of the College of Arts and Letters. He was the author of Being Catholic, Being American: the Notre Dame Story a two-volume history of Notre Dame from it's foundation to 1952.
