Roger L MiesfeldRoger L Miesfeld is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Professor Miesfeld's research focus for over 35 years has been on regulatory mechanisms goerning signal transduction in eukaryotic cells. For much of this time, his lab investigated steroid hormone signaling in human disease models, primarily cancer (leukemia and prostate cancer) and asthma. His research group also discovered novel biochemical processes that regulate metabolic regulation of blood meal metabolism and eggshell development in Aedes mosquitoes, which transmit the dengue and Zika viruses. Professor Miesfeld has taught a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and medical school biochemistry courses over the past 30-plus years. He currently teaches undergraduate biochemistry using both a hybrid class model for in-person courses and a fully online format. He has authored two other textbooks, Applied Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry: A Short Course, and served five years as the Chemistry & Biochemistry department head at the University of Arizona. Professor Miesfeld received his BS and MS degrees in cell biology from San Diego State University and his PhD in biochemistry from Stony Brook University. He was a Jane Coffin Childs Postdoctoral Fellow and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Scholar in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, before becoming a faculty member at the University of Arizona in 1987.
