As the daughter of a U.S. naval officer and the wife of a naval officer, she moved about 56 times during the first 50 years of her life In 1975 she met her husband, who was in fligt school at the U.S. Navy base in Pensacola, Florida. They were married in May of that year. At the completion of his training they were stationed in Agana, Guam, where their daughter was born in 1977.
