Her book The Stuff Between the Stars, illustrated by Aimée Sicuro, is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection, and won a Crystal Kite Awrd. Her picture book Big Bear and Little Fish, illustrated by Il Sung Na, was named a Charlotte Huck Award Recommended Book for its “potential to transform children’s lives by inviting compassion, imagination and wonder”. Its companion title is Bear’s Big Idea. Sandra’s most recent book is Seven: A Most Remarkable Pigeon, illustrated once more by Aimée Sicuro.
