Shannon Vaughn HoctorProf. Shannon Vaughn Hoctor (born 24 April 1967) obtained the degrees BA (1985- 1987), LLB (1988-1989) and LLM (1991, graduated 1992) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He took the first steps in his academic career at the Facultyof Law at the University of Cape Town, inter alia teaching a course in specific crimes, before proceeding to Leiden in the Netherlands to begin doctoral studies. After two years in Leiden, he took up a contract teaching post at the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), South Africa at the beginning of 1996. He was appointed to a senior lectureship at UPE from the beginning of 1997, teaching Criminal Law and Jurisprudence, and was awarded the degree DJuris by the University of Leiden in June 1997. After being promoted as associate professor at UPE, he took up a chair in Law at the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal) in Pietermaritzburg, where he has taught since July 2002. He teaches substantive Criminal Law at undergraduate and postgraduate level, along with courses in access to justice and sentencing. He also served as Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2010-2011. Professor Hoctor also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Latin from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (2014). Professor Hoctor has published numerous articles in law journals, along with several chapters in books, and has authored books in criminal law, statutory offences and road traffic law, along with four edited works. He has served as editor-in-chief of the South African Journal of Criminal Justice since 2010 and assistant editor of Obitersince 2002.
