Doyle was inspired by his university teacher, Joseph Bell, for the character of Sherlock Holmes. In a letter to Bell, Doyle wrote, "It is most certainly to you that I owe Sherlock Holmes ... round the center of deduction and inference and observation which I have heard you inculcate I have tried to build up a man”. He had a keen interest in mystical subjects as well and was influenced by a member of Portsmouth Literary and Philosophical Society to start a series of psychic investigations which included experiments in telepathy and sitting with mediums.
