His experiences among industrial and rural workers shaped both his political engagement and his literary output.A committed member of the Portuguese Communist Party, Pereira Gomes used literature as a tool for social critique, exposing the harsh realities of exploitation and inequality under Portugal's Estado Novo dictatorship. His best-known novel, Esteiros (1941), depicts the struggles of working-class children forced into labour, becoming a cornerstone of neorealist literature. Another important work, Engrenagem (published posthumously in 1951), examines the mechanisms of oppression within capitalist society.Persecuted for his political activism, he lived much of his later life in secrecy, suffering from poor health.
