Steven CapsutoSteven Capsuto studied translation at Rutgers University and is a full-time translator of literary, historical, medical, and commercial texts from Spanish, French, Catalan, Portuguese, and Ladino. He grew up in the Philadelphia area in a part-Sephardc, part-Ashkenazic Jewish family.
From the 1980s to the 2000's he oversaw the GLBT Library/Archives of Philadelphia. He srved as a consultant and researcheron doicuymentaries, After Stonewall, TV Revolution, and The Question of Equality. His most recent published translation is Amazônia by Sebastião Salgado (Taschen, 2022). Steven has translated more than a dozen contemporary Spanish stage plays into English, including the Marilia Samper drama, Happiness, which was produced in London in 2022 to uniformly positive reviews. Since 2019, he has been the main Ladino-to-English translator for The Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization (Yale University Press), for which he also translated dozens of Jewish texts from medieval and early-modern Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, and Judeo-Aragonese. Steven is the author of Alternate Channels: Queer Images on 20th Century TV (Ballantine, 2000; revised twentieth-anniversary edition: 2020), and was the lead historical consultant for the 2020 Apple TV+ documentary series Visible: Out on Television. He lives in New York City.
