Thora HirdThora Hird, one of Britain's best-known TV personalities, was born in Morecambe, Lancashire, the daughter of theatrical parents. She began acting when she was twenty and has had a highly successful film career as well as starring in many TV comedies.She presented 'Praise Be!' for many years and in 1993 became a Dame of the British Empire.

She married James Scott and had a daughter, Janette Scott, the film actress. James died in 1994 after nearly sixty years of marriage. She has two grandchildren, Daisy Anne and James.
