Toker DereliDr Toker Dereli (1936) received his BA from the Faculty of Economics, Istanbul University, having majored in economics, industrial relations and labour law. He joined the Department of Labour Economics and Industrial Relations of the same faculty as research assistant in 1961. Dr Dereli completed his graduate studies at the Cornell ILR School (MS, 1964) and Istanbul University (Ph.D., 1965). He became an associate professor in 1969 and full professor in 1975 at the Faculty of Economics, Istanbul University. Professor Dereli worked as a visiting professor at Temple University (1971-1973 and 1982-1984) and at McMaster University (1991-1992), where he taught courses on collective bargaining, labour relations, human resource management and organizational behaviour, for a total period of five years. In the autumn semester of the 1981-1982 academic year, he taught a comparative labour course at the Faculty of Law, Catholic University of Leuven. He also taught various subjects at Boğaziçi University (1976-1996) and several other Turkish universities as well as in his own institution, Istanbul University, since the mid-1960s. His publications include nine books and many articles in his areas of interest. Professor Dereli has worked as a mediator-arbitrator in many labour disputes. He was the President of the Turkish Industrial Relations Association until 2012 and has been involved actively as a consultant in the various labour law reform projects of his country, including the preparation of the original draft for the new Labour Act of Turkey. From 1989 to 2008, he acted as the spokesperson for the Turkish government on the ILO's Conference Committee. Professor Dereli was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, İstanbul University, for four years (1999.2003) from where he retired in May 2003.
