Ty Gwy WilsonTy "GWY" Wilson is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, a Cherokee historian, author, filmmaker, artist, and community advocate from Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Raised in the Lee Street neighborhood, the last predominantly Black Cherokee neighborhood of Tahleqah in the late 1900's, he grew up inside Cherokee life and carries that world into everything he creates.He is the founder and president of the Cherokees for Black Indian History Preservation Foundation, serves on the Cherokee Nation Freedmen History Advisory Committee, the Cherokee Nation Art and History Project Committee, and sits on the board of the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame. Ty is editor and contributing writer of Oklahoma Black Cherokees and author of 1st American: Cherokee and Cherokee Freedmen: We Are Cherokee, the first book of his "BLACK CHEROKEE" series.Across his work as a writer, filmmaker, jewelry maker, photographer, songwriter, and poet, Ty's purpose is steady: to honor the elders, families, and neighborhoods that raised him, and to ensure that Native American stories are preserved in their full truth.
