Vernon Fowlergraduated in Agriculture and Animal Physiology (Hons) at the University of Reading, and obtained a PhD from Leeds University, England. His life's work (over 40 years) has been devoted to academic research and teaching in animal growth and nutrition t the 'Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen', the 'Scottish Agricultural College' and the University of Aberdeen. He is also a visiting Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served on the Agricultural Research Council working parties on the 'Nutrient Requirements of Pigs' and the Joint Consultative Council aimed at achieving better integration between research and practice. In 1988, he was given the prestigious 'David Black Award' for outstanding service to the British Pig Industry. He was awarded a visiting fellowship by the Polish Academy of Sciences and a Commonwealth Fellowship by the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture.
