Walter Gilbey BartSir Walter Gilbey, 1st Baronet, was an English wine merchant, horse breeder, author, and philanthropist, born on May 2, 1831, in Bishop's Stortford, United Kingdom. He is best known for his contributions to the horse-breeding industry, as well as hiswritings on the history and development of various horse breeds. In addition to his work with horses, Gilbey was also involved in the wine trade, achieving success as a wine merchant. His philanthropic efforts were significant, supporting various causes throughout his life. He was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Gilbey and had a family of his own, with children including Rose, Sebastian, and Emily Lucy Gilbey. Gilbey s personal life included a long partnership with Ellen Parish, whom he was with from 1858 onward. He passed away on November 12, 1914, at the age of 83, in his hometown of Bishop's Stortford.
