William Ralph IngeWilliam Ralph Inge was an English author, Anglican priest, and theologian known for his influence on religious and philosophical thought in the early 20th century. Born on 6 June 1860 in Crayke, Yorkshire, England, he was the son of William Inge and ary Elizabeth Inge, and was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, where he later served as Professor of Divinity. He also held the prominent position of Dean of St Paul's Cathedral and became widely recognized as a public intellectual. Often called the Gloomy Dean for his candid and sometimes pessimistic views, Inge wrote extensively on Christian mysticism, ethics, and modern society, addressing the challenges of faith in a changing world. He was a Fellow of the British Academy and contributed numerous essays, lectures, and books aimed at both scholarly and general audiences. In 1905, he married Mary Catharine Inge, with whom he had five children.
