Yen ChuYen Chu was born in Taichung, Taiwan, before her family immigrated to the U.S. Growing up in Kansas, she spent most of her time at the public library, dis- covering a passion for the sciences, literature, and the arts.As an East Asian, she learned tospeak Mandarin Chinese at home and English at school, becoming fascinated with the dichotomy of Asian versus American culture, as if stepping into a different world outside of her home. She immersed herself in the rich and colorful lifestyle of Silver City, N.M. after moving to New Mexico, studying the methods in which people may communicate and connect despite their differences.
