Diese Edition erschließt alle überlieferten Briefe an Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, 1763-1825), einen der erfolgreichsten Schriftsteller der Goethezeit. Die von Eduard Berend in den 1920er Jahren begonnene historisch-kritische Ausgabe der Werke und Briefe Jean Pauls wird damit um die Vierte Abteilung ergänzt. Den Briefen von Jean Paul (Dritte Abteilung) werden die Gegenbriefe komplementär zur Seite gestellt, so dass der erhaltene Briefwechsel des Autors erstmals vollständig vorliegen wird. Die etwas mehr als 2.200 Briefe von annähernd 400 Korrespondentinnen und Korrespondenten werden wie die Briefe Jean Pauls in chronologischer Abfolge in acht Bänden veröffentlicht. Während der Schwerpunkt des ersten Bandes in der 'gelehrten Welt' des Fürstentums Bayreuth liegt, bei meist jungen Menschen, die es danach drängt, die Grenzen der universitären Aufklärungstheologie ebenso zu überschreiten wie gesellschaftliche und politische Schranken des deutschen Spätabsolutismus, hat sich der Kreis der Korrespondenzpartner im Zeitraum des zweiten Briefbandes in sozialer und regionaler Hinsicht bereits beträchtlich erweitert: Jean-Paul-Leser wie der Leipziger Schriftsteller Friedrich von Oertel und vor allem zahlreiche Leserinnen aus nah und fern, bürgerlicher wie adliger Herkunft, werden zu Briefe schreibenden Freunden und Freundinnen des Autors. Der Initiative Charlotte von Kalbs verdankt Jean Paul seine erste Reise nach Weimar im Juni 1796, die zu einem weiteren Zeichen seiner Ankunft unter den Ersten der Deutschen Literatur wird. Es sind äußerlich bewegte Jahre, die Jean Paul, nachdem er im Herbst 1797 das heimatliche Hof verlassen hat, in Leipzig und seit Herbst 1798 in Weimar verbringt, unterbrochen von Reisen, u. a. nach Dresden, Hof, Halberstadt, Jena, Gotha und Hildburghausen. Und es ist eine literarisch produktive Zeit, in der so wichtige Werke wie die "Palingenesien" (1798), "Jean Pauls Briefe und bevorstehender Lebenslauf" (1799) und der erste Band des "Titan" (1800) entstehen. In Leipzig verkehrt Jean Paul nun in gesellschaftlichen Kreisen, zu denen er Anfang der 1780er Jahre als mittelloser Student keinen Zugang hatte finden können. In Weimar wird Herder zur zentralen Gestalt seiner dortigen Bekanntschaften. Gleim und seine Freunde genießen den Besuch des Dichters im Sommer 1798. Jean Paul erhält eine Fülle von Zuschriften der neu gewonnenen Freunde und Bekannten, von Leserinnen und Lesern, die sich an den verehrten Autor des "Hesperus" (1795) und des "Siebenkäs" (1796/97) wenden. Gleichzeitig wird die Korrespondenz der früheren Jahre fortgesetzt - von besonderer Bedeutung weiterhin der Hofer und Bayreuther Freundeskreis, darunter der Schul- und Studienfreund Christian Otto, aber auch die Mitte der 1790er Jahre aus entfernteren Orten hinzugekommenen Freundinnen Emilie von Berlepsch und Charlotte von Kalb. In den ersten Wochen des Leipziger Aufenthalts entwickelt sich die langjährige Freundschaft mit dem jungen Violinisten und Philologen Paul Emile Thieriot. Im Falle Friedrich Heinrich Jacobis ist es Jean Paul, der im Herbst 1798 den Briefwechsel und damit den aufschlussreichen Dialog der beiden Autoren über die philosophischen Streitfragen des Tages und die Intentionen der eigenen Werke eröffnet.
