About the Book

This work is a continuation of an effort to study foundations and applications of conceptual modelling in various environments. The motivation of these efforts is the fact that conceptual modelling and knowledge representation together with various kinds of interference systems are important sub-fields in the design and use of information systems and are also becoming increasingly important in other fields of engineering. The modelling problem is a key factor in various disciplines, ranging from database-design, knowledge engineering, logic, artificial intelligence and cognitive science to philosophy and linguistics. The contributions to this volume direct the focus of interest to the development and use of conceptual models in information systems of various kinds and they aim to improve awareness of general or specific problems and solutions in conceptual modelling. They also attempt to reveal new aspects of modelling to which, in the contributors' opinion, more attention should be paid.

Table of Contents:
Part 1 Foundations of conceptual modelling: the ontological questions concerning the concept of concept, J.Palomaki; modelling mind - on questions about some interrelated concepts involving "modelling", E.Marjomaa; assisting the articulation of the real and mental world, K.Hori et al; modelling of attribute concepts and their classification for machine thesaurus, N.Okada; conceptual level user interfaces to databases and information systems, H.Kangassalo; a function-based model of an object for image understanding, T.Kitahashi et al. Part 2 Formal systems for conceptual modelling: a meta-logical framework for knowledge bases, J.F.Nilsson; generalization of weakly reducing EFS with abstraction, A.Yamamoto; conceptual modelling in MSL, N.Yonezaki; data-flow trees in natural language interfaces, G.Koch; knowledge-based data modelling technique, H-M.Haav and A.Kalja; minimal queries for learning concepts in an information system, J.Henno; using integrity constraints, T.Andreasen. Part 3 Modelling in information systems: a conceptual metamodel for an information system - an object-oriented interpretation, J.Iivari; databases with structured values and OO-flavoured conceptual schemata, I.Kobayashi; DSS for aiding the selection of methods and tools for ISD projects, V.Savolainen. Part 4 Foundations and applications of knowledge-based systems: problem representation in knowledge-based systems and automation of software design, S.Ohsuga; logic programming with a large vocabulary, Y.Tanaka; program understanding by means of the model of algorithm-based programming knowledge, H.Ueno; case memory support systems - tools for computer supported case-based reasoning, K.Eloranta; using hypertext to implement an intelligent CAI course, J.Henno; using hypertext to implement a knowledge acquisition system, H.Jaakkola and J.Henno; a feed-forward artificial neural network as a simulator for a chemical process, A.Bulsari and H.Saxen; an O(n) time and O(n2) processors parallel parsing algorithm for context-free grammars, M.Amamiya and T.Mine.
