About the Author: Denna Freed's very first memory occurs at just three years of age. She is sitting in the floor of her Aunt Betty's house with one of those big red pencils that young children use when they learn to write. "I remember it very clearly," she states, with no trace of doubt in her mind. "I remember the big black pot-bellied stove. The firelight flickering on the walls, the smell of wood-smoke, the warmth of the fire on my skin...and my momma's voice, speaking to me, encouraging me..." "Write your name, Dink. Show Aunt Betty how smart you are..." And she remembers willing that tiny hand to make five letters, D-e-n-n-a, on the sheet of paper - calling out the letters one by one, and saying "That's me!" when she finished. Though she didn't know it at the time, writing was to become a passion, an (almost) life-long dream of becoming an author! But her first love - her very first love! - was horses. When she was nine years old her father brought home a pinto pony and she fell in love. After just a few weeks she had decided that she was going to be the first female jockey! Not long after she became "horse crazy" as her relatives liked to call it, her Aunt Brendy - who was a voracious reader with a love of all books - bought her a copy of "Black Beauty" as a gift. She devoured it in two days, and thus began her love affair with the written word. Unfortunately, when she hit puberty at age twelve, her dreams of being a diminutive jockey were dashed. She decided if she couldn't be a professional rider then she would make a career out of her second love and become a professional writer, instead. And for the next forty years that dream never changed, never wavered. And now, at the age of 53, she has finally made that dream a reality.
