Die erste Runde beispielsweise haben nicht wir, sondern die Feindseite verloren, denn sie hatte geglaubt, uns durch immer neu erfundene Nachrichten nervös zu machen. Ich habe nicht den Eindruck, daß sie alle wahnsinnig nervös sind" - so Joseph Goebbels in einer Rede am 4. Juni 1944 anlässlich des NSDAP-Kreistages in Nürnberg. Schon 48 Stunden später zeigte sich an den Stränden Nordfrankreichs, dass die deutsche Seite sich in jeder Hinsicht zu selbstsicher gegeben hatte. Wie war es aber zu dieser Arroganz der Mächtigen in Berlin gekommen? Warum vertraute die deutsche Bevölkerung im vorletzten Kriegsjahr noch immer auf die Kraft und Ausdauer ihres "Führers"? Ein Mann war dafür verantwortlich, der es wie kein zweiter verstand, mit Worten die im Bombenkrieg lebenden Menschen in den "Totalen Krieg" zu führen. Gestützt auf Illusionen und inszenierte Hoffnungen präsentierte der Rheinländer sein Bild des Krieges über Film, Funk und Zeitungen wie - "Das Reich" - den Massen. Romanvorlagen zum Sieg im Westen, Wochenschauberichte von der Front und Polemik gegen die angloamerikanischen Truppen in Nordfrankreich änderten wenig an der Tatsache, dass Hitlers "Tausendjähriges Reich" dem Untergang entgegen steuerte. Kaum wird das Verhalten des promovierten Germanisten zu verstehen sein, wenn nicht vorher ein Blick auf das Leben des Ministers für "Volksaufklärung und Propaganda" vor 1939 geworfen wird. Erst in diesem Zusammenhang erklärt sich letztlich sein Verhältnis zur Gesellschaft und zum seit 1939 tobenden Weltkrieg. Früher oder später sind alle Fäden wieder im Begriff der Propaganda vereint, der zusehends das Leben Goebbels' dominierte - ja fast zur Realität erhoben wurde.
