Auszug: Andre Paul Guillaume Gide (* 22. November 1869 in Paris; 19. Februar 1951 ebd.) war ein franzosischer Schriftsteller und der siebte aus Frankreich stammende Nobelpreistrager (1947) fur Literatur. Gide wuchs in Paris als einziges Kind einer wohlhabenden kalvinistisch protestantischen Familie auf. Der Vater war Professor der Rechtswissenschaft und stammte aus der mittleren Bourgeoisie der sudfranzosischen Kleinstadt Uzes, die Mutter aus der Grossbourgeoisie von Rouen. Mit knapp elf Jahren verlor Gide seinen Vater. Zwar trat dadurch keinerlei Notlage ein, doch war er nun ganz der puritanischen Erziehung seiner Mutter unterworfen. Vielleicht war er auch deshalb ein schwieriges Kind, was wiederum haufige Wechsel von Schulen und Privatlehrern verursachte. Zudem litt er in der Vorpubertat mehrfach unter Nervenkrisen, konnte 1890 jedoch seine Schulzeit normal auf dem Traditionsgymnasium Henri IV abschliessen, wo er sich u. a. mit dem spateren Autoren Pierre Louys und dem spateren sozialistischen Politiker Leon Blum befreundete. Bei einem langeren Besuch in Rouen 1882 hatte er ein inniges Verhaltnis zu seiner fast drei Jahre alteren Kusine Madeleine Rondeaux entwickelt, mit der er sich ab Anfang 1890 stillschweigend verlobt glaubte, die sich aber, z. T. wohl auf Druck beider Mutter, seinen Heiratswunschen zunachst entzog. Den Sommer 1890 verbrachte Gide in Savoyen, wo er sein erstes langeres Werk verfasste: Les Cahiers
