Diese zunehmende Globalisierung bzw. die Internationalisierung der Märkte beeinflusst nicht nur die Absatzseite der Unternehmen, sondern hat auch großen Einfluss auf den Beschaffungsbereich. Von daher besteht die Notwendigkeit aufzuzeigen, welches strategische Potenzial der bisher doch eher "stiefmütterlich" behandelte Beschaffungsbereich bieten kann. Die Möglichkeiten, die ein Unternehmen zu Kostensenkungen und Ertragsteigerungen hat, sind insbesondere im Absatzbereich ziemlich ausgereizt ("stagnierende Märkte") bzw. nur mit sehr großem Aufwand zu realisieren. Aus diesem Grund erkennen viele Unternehmen, dass Erfolgspotenziale nicht mehr ausschließlich im Vertrieb und Marketing zu finden sind, sondern gerade im Bereich der Beschaffung viele Möglichkeiten noch nicht ausgeschöpft sind. Dies macht es für die Unternehmen erforderlich, sich mit Beschaffungsmarketing auseinander zu setzen. Des Weiteren führt die Internationalisierung bei den Unternehmen zu großen Abhängigkeiten von politischen, wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Entwicklungen in wichtigen Absatz- und Beschaffungsmärkten. Auf der Absatzseite wurde schon frühzeitig mit Hilfe des Marketing begonnen die Chancen und Risiken, die internationale Absatzmärkte mit sich bringen, zu berücksichtigen und zu analysieren. Entsprechende Analysen der Chancen und Risiken sind aber auch für die Beschaffungsseite des Unternehmens notwendig.
