Extrait: Oscar Niemeyer, de son vrai nom Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida de Niemeyer Soares, n Rio de Janeiro le 15 dcembre 1907, est un des plus clbres architectes brsiliens. Son uvre, qui s'inscrit troitement dans le mouvement du style international, tient une place majeure dans l'histoire de l'architecture moderne. Oscar Niemeyer entre l'Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Rio de Janeiro en 1930 o il entame une formation d'architecte. A cette poque, c'est la monte du modernisme Europen et Nord Amricain qui marque l'architecture internationale avec les pionniers du modernisme que sont Walter Gropius, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe et Le Corbusier. Pourtant le Brsil reste en marge de cette influence, du fait de sa rcente indpendance et du faible dveloppement conomique du pays cette priode. C'est galement le cas pour sa formation d'architecte, ancre dans un classicisme franais trs prsent du fait de la colonisation europenne et de l'influence franaise dans les domaines de la technique, de la construction et de l'administration. Trs critique vis--vis de sa formation, l'architecte confie lors d'un entretien: C'tait l'poque de la "Machine habiter" de Le Corbusier, l'cole nous apprenions que les faades taient dtermines par l'agencement intrieur, qui conditionne tous les autres lments.
