About the Book

The artist, Leila Daw, and the critic, Robert E. Kohn, discover some mutually binding interests. In her artworks, ostensibly exploring the concepts of mapping, Kohn recognizes the brightly colored dots, zigzags, grids, sets of parallel lines, and nested curves that pulsate in the Paleolithic cave paintings, suggesting that her art-enabling genes carry the memory of those geometric forms from tens of thousands of years ago. She had not been aware of this influence on her work and excitedly wonders "if this is why I'm so interested in ancient sites and paleolithic and neolithic art." When Kohn detects her subtle effort to portray three dimensions together with two in the same artwork, she joyfully responds "thank you for this!" Daw's respect for levels of dimensionality along with her joyous use of thick paint and tactile effects reveal the skepticism of Abstract Expressionism that she shares with Kohn. This book deals with contemporary art criticism, cave paintings, Jean Clottes, Clement Greenberg, Fibonacci series, genes and genetic memory, Paleolithic cosmology, mapping and shamanism.
About the Author: Robert E. Kohn's other publications include journal articles in Interdisciplinary Literary Studies, Fall 2008; Style, Summer 2009; Midwest Quarterly, Winter 2009; Soundings, Fall/Winter 2010; and a book on art criticism and theory, A Darwinian Reading of Bill Kohn's Paintings. Dr. Kohn is Professor Emeritus, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Leila Daw is an independent artist, and Professor Emeritus, Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. Her art practice is rooted in concepts and processes of cartography, exploration, orienteering, and diagramming personal relationships to communities and the natural world. Until this interchange with Kohn, she was not aware of the genetic remembrance in her work. Daw's artwork has been featured across the U.S. and Europe, and can be seen as permanent public installations at Bradley International Airport, Hartford, CT; the New Haven Public Library; Northwestern CT Community College, and Metrolink, the St. Louis light rail system. Pieces are in the collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum, DeCordova Museum, Boston Public Library, St. Louis Art Museum, The Housatonic Art Museum, the Rose Art Museum of Brandeis University, as well as in many corporate collections.
