Capturé par les pirates barbaresques, il s'évade après trois années d'esclavage à Alger, mais l'irrésistible souffle de la liberté le fait repartir cette fois encore plus loin, vers les ors de l'Extrème Asie dans la suite de l'Ambassade envoyée au Royaume de Siam par le roi Louis XIV. Sur cette terre lointaine, il rencontre l'amour, mais à nouveau la violence. Il repart alors vers d'autres horizons... Ce récit autobiographique traduit du provençal a été découvert dans un coffre de bois vendu au cours d'enchères publiques.
About the Author: Philippe Franchini est né à Saigon, de père corse (Mathieu Franchini, directeur de l'Hôtel Continental) et de mère vietnamienne (Le Thi Trong, de la province de Mytho).Il passe son enfance et son adolescence en Indochine, qu'il quitte en 1946 pour suivre des études universitaires à Paris (Sorbonne, licence de lettres puis D.E.S. d'Histoire). Après une carrière d'artiste peinte à Paris, il retourne à Saigon (Sud Vièt Nam) en 1965 pour y diriger l'Hôtel Continental. L'Hôtel Continental est alors le célèbre point d'ancrage de voyageurs, d'écrivains, d'aventuriers (Segalen, Malraux, Bodard, Jacques Laurent, James Jones, etc...) et de journalistes. C'est à cette époque que Philippe Franchini se lie d'amitié avec les réalisateurs Raoul Coutard, Ange Casta, les journalistes Marcel Giugliaris, Corrado Pizzinelli, Bernardo Valli, Egisto Corradi, Oriana Fallacci, Tiziano Terzani, James Burnett, Jean-Claude Pomonti, Christian Hoche, Jon Randal, Edward Behr. Tout en dirigeant l'hôtel, il poursuit ses activités de peintre: il expose à Hongkong et aux Etats-Unis, s'initie à la calligraphie chinoise. Il tourne plusieurs courts métrages (16mm), dont Tam Quât, et Hôtel Bambou, sélectionné au festival du Film d'Art 1968 de Tokyo (tous films à Pathé-Archives). Il quitte Saïgon en avril 1975, année de la chute de la ville, pour s'installer à Paris. Depuis lors, il se consacre essentiellement à l'écriture (Histoire, essais, romans, cf rubriques correspondantes), tout en collaborant à des ouvrages de photographies et à des films. Il collabore également avec le journal Le Monde (années 80 - dessins, en lien avec Paul-Jean Franceschini) et le magazine L'Express (années 90 - critiques littéraires). Philippe Franchini vit aujourd'hui à Paris et à Ajaccio avec son épouse Limen, avec qui il a eu trois enfants (Anne, Mathieu, Léna). Ses dernières parutions en date: une enquète policière du fameux Poulpe, intitulée Quatre Corses Majeurs (éd. Baleine - mai 2013), la réédition de son essai Métis (éd. Baleine - mai 2014) et la réédition aux éditions Equateurs de Continental Saïgon qui raconte cet hôtel mythique de la Saïgon indochinoise.
