About the Book

If your loved one has memory or cognitive challenges but still enjoys the calm, relaxing pleasure of reading, this book is for them. It is the first in a series of illustrated senior fiction books, each telling the story of a grandparent spending a special day with their grandchild. It is especially written for people with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. It's filled with full-page, full-color, high resolution images that will enhance their enjoyment of the story and help them visualize the characters and events taking place in it.

"The Bake Sale" is the story of a grandmother who's thrilled that her four-year-old granddaughter is going to help her bake cookies for her church bake sale. They have fun baking three kinds of cookies, and then they package them and take them to the church. While they're there, they shop for some delicious baked goods for themselves.

This is a short, upbeat story with an uncomplicated plot, simple language, and a satisfying ending. The act of baking cookies is full of positive associations, so it's sure to bring a smile to your loved one's face. Reading about a grandmother's joy as she bakes cookies with her granddaughter may inspire your loved one to reminisce about their own family gatherings and traditions that centered around baking.

This book provides an excellent activity for a caregiver to share with the people they care for. It also provides an opportunity for a child to interact with a loved one by reading it to them.

At Sunny Street Books, our illustrated stories are carefully edited for word choice as well as sentence length and complexity, making them easier to comprehend than other adult fiction. But while the content of our stories is gentle and sweet, it isn't childish. The main characters are adults with adult perceptions.

Readability.com gives "The Bake Sale" a grade of "A" for readability. This book also has a Flesch Reading Ease Score of 91.1 on a scale of 100, with 100 being the most accessible to the widest population, including many readers with memory or cognitive challenges.
