About the Book

Courses in Exile Writing and Exile Literature have become commonplace, for the world is well aware of the ever-present advent of this condition. While the names of the experience change, the essence of the condition remains. Boundaries of Exile, Conditions of Hope presents the fiction, poems and essays of Albert Russo and Martin Tucker in its treatment of the substantial, though more elusive, feelings of inner exile. It deals with the forced exits and observable impacts of physical exile on the writers who have endured such experiences, but it concentrates on the conditions of inner exile. Such conditions stem, of course, from outer/physical/ political/social causes, but the psychic condition of loss and the awareness of, and triumph over, loss is what matters in the content and context of this book. Exile once experienced is not a transient affair but a constant vessel in the stream of the heart. Identity after exile is never the same as identity prior to its arrival. About the Authors: Albert Russo, who has published worldwide over 65 books of poetry, fiction and photography, in English and in French, his two mother-tongues, is the recipient of many awards, such as The American Society of Writers Fiction Award, The British Diversity Short Story Award, several New York Poetry Forum Awards, Amelia Prose and Poetry awards and the Prix Colette, among others. His work has been translated into a dozen languages, including German, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish, Bengali and Polish, and broadcast by the World Service of the BBC, publishing on the five continents, in 22 countries. He has also garnered several prizes for his photography books, Indie Excellence awards, among others. He's been a member of the jury of the Prix Européen for over 25 years (sitting on the panel with Ionesco until his death) and sat in 1996 on the panel of the prestigious Neustadt Prize for Literature, which often leads to the Nobel Prize Martin Tucker is the editor of Confrontation, the prize-winning and internationally distributed literary journal, and Professor Emeritus of Long Island University. Dr. Tucker's reviews, essays, poems and stories have been widely published, including appearances in The New York Times Book Review, Publishers Weekly, The Nation, and The New Republic. He is also the recipient of two fellowships for distinguished achievement from the National Endowment for the Arts and Coordinating Council of Literary Magazines. During his tenure, Confrontation has won the O'Henry Prize Story, Pushcart Prize, and has recognized in the Best American Short Stories. He is the author of several literary studies and the editor of more than 20 volumes of literary encyclopedia, including Moulton's Library of Literary Criticism and the highly regarded The Literary Exile in the Twentieth Century as well as three collections of his poetry.
