About the Book

Table of Contents:
From the very start of World War 2 it was apparent to the German High Command that there was a need for special forces to make the tactics of Blitzkrieg a success. Rail junctions, bridges, crossroads - all needed to be captured intact to ensure the advance was not held up. The Brandenburgers were to be this force - highly trained commandos who would capture key strategic points by whatever means necessary. Sometimes, 'whatever means necessary' included methods of subterfuge - such as wearing enemy uniforms and other clandestine means - that many senior commanders disapproved of strongly, including such luminaries as Edwin Rommel. This did not stop the Brandenburgers seeing action from the very start of the Polish campaign with Brandenburg men being deployed before the invasion ensuring the safe capture of factories in Silesia which were essential for the German war effort. They went on to take part in operations in Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium and the Balkans - where Brandenburg units were used in the capture of the Iron Gate on the Danube to allow German river traffic to flow. In the invasion of Russia the Brandenburgers played a key role, capturing a vital bridge across the San River; subsequently attacks were made by Brandenburg units on the Murmansk rail route and on Soviet naval commandos using motor boats. In Spring 1941 the Afrika Kompanie was formed, and Brandenburg units took part in the capture of the Island of Leros as well as in the failed attempt to capture Tito in the summer of 1944. The unit was disbanded in September 1944, being amalgamated with the Grossdeutschland Division. Members of the Brandenburg Division were given the choice to be transferred to other units and many joined Otto Skorzeny's Waffen SS commando unit.
