After presenting national and state data as evidence of the achievement gap's result on the country's economy, taxpayers, prisons, and unemployment, Fortune asks the question, "How can low-achieving minorities close the achievement gap?" The answers are revealed in 514 pages of meticulous research, successful strategies, and on-site visits to 7 gap-closing, California K-12 public schools. About the Author: REX FORTUNE, a father, husband and educator in Sacramento, California is an inspiring educational reform advocate for closing the achievement gap. Fortune is chairman of the board and director of research and evaluation at Fortune School of Education (FSE) in Sacramento. He earned a BS at North Carolina A&T State University, an MA at UC Berkeley, and his doctorate in education from Stanford University. His recent work in California educational reform includes supporting the Sacramento County Board of Education's authorization of five K-8 charter schools. Fortune also serves as president of the board for Pacific Charter Institute, which has a charter school in Sacramento County and another in San Joaquin County, both in California. In 2002, Fortune co-authored LEADERSHIP ON PURPOSE: Promising Practices for African American and Hispanic Students, published by Corwin Press. A former board member of WestEd, Fortune was a research scientist for the American Institutes for Research in Palo Alto, California. He was selected to conduct independent field research in 1970 in Nigeria. During his 40 years as an educator, he was a high school teacher, school site administrator, associate superintendent of public instruction in the California State Dept. of Education, and superintendent of two unified school districts. In 1989, Fortune founded Project Pipeline (aka Fortune School of Education). For over two decades, FSE has credentialed teachers in single subjects, multiple subjects, special education, and most recently, administrative services. In 2008, Fortune developed a partnership with University of the Pacific and established a Master's Degree in Education program for FSE graduates. BRIDGING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP reflects Fortune's unique ability to assess careful research, make keen observations, and establish a vision that merits implementation. He challenges leaders, parents and teachers to make a positive impact by bridging the achievement gap and illuminates the way for change with proven strategies in this book.
