About the Book

The Burning Well tells the remarkable story of Henry Lindqvist, a Swedish immigrant who came to Minnesota in the late 1800s with his wife, Astrid, and five young children, seeking the American dream in the dense forests near Hinckley. Together with his Norwegian neighbor Peter Johansson, Henry works tirelessly to transform wilderness into farmland, building not just a homestead but a thriving community rooted in faith, mutual support, and shared dreams. The story follows Henry's family through their beginnings in America as they clear land, build homes, establish friendships, and create the foundation for a prosperous future. Their children attend the newly established school, the men find winter work at the local lumber mill, and the community comes together to help rebuild after a devastating tornado strikes the nearby town of Sandstone. But on September 1, 1894, everything changes in a matter of hours. The Great Hinckley Fire-one of the most devastating wildfires in American history-tears through their world with unprecedented fury. In a desperate attempt to save his family, Henry makes impossible choices that will haunt him forever. When the flames finally pass, he emerges from his well as the sole survivor, having lost his beloved wife Astrid and all five children: Erik, Margareta, Nils, Gustaf, and little Ingrid. Broken in body and spirit, Henry is transported to a hospital in Duluth where he begins the long journey of physical and emotional recovery. Under the caring hands of Lily Thompson, a compassionate German-American nurse whose own faith has been deepened by personal loss, Henry slowly learns that healing is possible. As his burns heal and his strength returns, he discovers that his heart's capacity for love has not been destroyed by tragedy. Henry's relationship with Lily blossoms from patient and caregiver to deep friendship and eventually to love. Their courtship is marked by Henry's gradual return to faith and purpose, as he finds meaning in helping other patients at the hospital work through their own traumas. When Henry and Lily marry, they face the decision of whether to return to the scene of his tragedy or build a new life elsewhere. The narrative is framed by the modern-day discovery of Henry's letters to his cousins in Sweden, found by his great-great-granddaughter during a genealogical trip. These letters, carefully preserved for over a century and recently translated from Swedish, reveal for the first time the full story of Henry's loss and recovery. The book weaves together themes of immigrant courage, the power of community, the testing and strengthening of faith through tragedy, the possibility of love after devastating loss, and the ways that family stories of faith and resilience echo through generations. It demonstrates how individual acts of courage and faith can create legacies that sustain families for generations, even when the original stories are forgotten or untold. Based on actual family letters and historical records of the Hinckley Fire, the novel brings to life the immigrant experience in late 19th-century Minnesota while exploring timeless themes of loss, healing, faith, and the remarkable capacity of the human spirit to find hope and purpose even in the aftermath of unimaginable tragedy. The Burning Well is ultimately a story about the soil of faith-how it can be burned over by life's fires yet still nurture new growth, how it can sustain not just one life but generations of lives, and how the dreams that grow from such soil can flourish beyond what any one person could imagine.
