Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled CHARGE AND SPIN TRANSPORT IN MESOSCOPIC SYSTEMS Submitted by Minhui ShangGuan for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in November 2007 Recent developments in manufacture technology, such as electron beam lithog- raphy, molecular beam epitaxy, etc., have made the fabrication of ultra-small devices experimentally possible, leading to signicant progress in the transport properties at the mesoscopic level. This thesis discusses both charge and spin related AC transports in mesoscopic system, in particular, the time-dependent spin current and frequency-dependent heat current. A theoretical investigation was reported on the possibility of generating pure spin current without an accompanying charge current, by applying a train of magnetic pulses on the leads of a tunnel junction. It is noted that the time av- eraged spin current is oscillating as a function of the pulse strength. Besides, due to quantum interference among the Fourier mode of the photon assisted tun- nelling, a negative spin current can also be observed for a positive spin chemical potential. The investigation of the frequency dependent transport, especially, noise, is important, since it can provide additional information on internal energy distri- bution of mesoscopic systems. As a consequence, uctuations of spin current and charge current of two-terminal systems in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, have been studied based on the scattering matrix theory. It was found that, even for a conserved spin current, the cross-correlation of spin cur- rent may become positive when spin-orbit coupling is present, exhibiting bosonic behavior. Indeed, the calculations on simple models show that the sign of the cross-correlation can be tuned by either the gate voltage or intra-dot coupling. It is well known that there are two fundamental requirements that any trans- port theory must satisfy, current conservation and gauge invariance, which are the consequence of long-range Coulomb interaction especially in ac transport. In order to satisfy these principles, the current-conserved and gauge-invariant frequency-dependent heat current in the presence of Coulomb interaction was derived, by taking the e(R)ect of internal Coulomb potential into account. The results show good consistence with that in DC case in the zero-frequency limit. DOI: 10.5353/th_b3955758 Subjects: Transport theory Mesoscopic phenomena (Physics)
