About the Book

If there were an overall theme to this special issue, it would be "play." Each contributor adds to the understanding of play in childhood and therapy in a unique way. Without play, children's creativity and emotions are stymied, and childhood becomes a diminished and dreary landscape. Play -- the space and language from which our understanding of children's unconscious unfolds -- proves germane as a metaphor in adult work. Playfulness may be the most cherished mental tool of analysts. Childhood experiences and fantasies remembered and forgotten, or conscious and unconscious, are a constant reference point for analytic work. This issue should stimulate researchers toward continuous exploration, development, and understanding.
