Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: In heutigen modernen Gesellschaften finden soziale und technische Entwicklungen statt, die einerseits neue Optionen und Chancen bieten, andererseits aber auch neue Verantwortlichkeiten und Risiken bergen (vgl. Beck 1986). Stichworte wie „Individualisierung, Globalisierung, Pluralisierung" sind beinahe täglich in den Medien zu lesen bzw. zu hören. Durch die damit einhergehenden gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen, die unsere Lebensumwelt immer komplexer machen, sowie durch die fortschreitende Auflösung tradierter Familienstrukturen, fühlen sich auf der einen Seite viele Menschen orientierungslos, verunsichert oder sogar überfordert. Die scheinbar unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten eines Individuums, sein Leben nach eigenen Maßstäben zu gestalten, bergen auch Risiken. Die Vielfältigkeit der Optionen bringt nicht nur mehr Verantwortung für die Lebensplanung und -gestaltung mit sich, sondern auch Verunsicherungen und den Zwang, Entscheidungen zu treffen. Auf der anderen Seite gibt es diejenigen, die einen Überblick bekommen oder behalten möchten über die vielfältigen Chancen, die sich in einer Welt bieten, in der alles möglich zu sein scheint. Diese Menschen suchen nach Hilfen, um die Chancen optimal nutzen zu können und nichts zu „verpassen". Hier handelt es sich nicht nur um eine soziologische, sondern auch um eine erwachsenenpädagogische Komponente. Um die Herausforderungen einer modernen komplexen Gesellschaft zu bewältigen, benötigt der Einzelne immer neue Kompetenzen, er ist aufgefordert zu „lebenslangem Lernen". Weinberg (2000, S. 76) stellt fest, es sei kennzeichnend für die Erwachsenen-bildung, dass sie eng mit dem Prozess des gesellschaftlichen Wandels verbunden ist. „Der Wandel in der Lebensweise, in der Arbeit, in den ökonomisch-technischen und den politischen Verhältnissen erzeugt Lernbedarf.
