La historia trata sobre la atormentada vida de Inés, quien en su infancia fue víctima del abuso sexual por parte de su padre. Esta narración sirve de marco para diferentes eventos sobre pecados, desenfrenos, desamores y evasiones.El personaje de Inés encarna el tragicismo de aquellos seres humanos que buscan una explicación del destino -de su propio destino- a partir de las circunstancias de sus vidas. Lucha, pasión muerte, vida, amor, manipulación, control, rechazo, erotismo, soledad... todo eso lo encarnan.El argumento central de la novela podría parecer sencillo: Inés busca la venganza en los hombres; pero al final de cuentas es una venganza contra sí misma, contra el estigma que cambió su vida: el incesto, las reiteradas violaciones de su padre.Las relaciones que establece Inés con sus múltiples amantes la hacen hundirse paulatinamente en un foso de contradicciones espirituales y mentales, muy cercanas a la locura. Logra percibir en los espejos -simbología de su vida interior- la voz de su padre, quien fantasmagóricamente ha tomado vida en su propio ser para seguirla sujetando a su recuerdo. Se trata de una lucha interna, no tanto para librarse del pecado sino de los estragos almáticos -voluntad, emociones, sentimientos...- y espirituales provocados por el incesto. Podría tener la narración una carga de alientos freudianos, muy cercanos a la neurosis sexual; además de una percibible oscuridad acerca de cualquier sentimentalismo.En ese proceso es explicable que nuestra protagonista, Inés, no siente ninguna simpatía personal -relación afectiva- por su esposo o por su hijo, Rodrigo, y esto debido al hecho de que representan al género humano que ella detesta.Su único sentimiento presuntamente edificante, leal y genuino es hacia su hija, Lucía, quien encarna de alguna forma la imagen genérica de la mujer como un ser débil, necesitado de protección frente a los hombres. Todo esto la hace caer en una especie de amor obsesivo, destructivo, que la lleva a una relación indiferente y alejada de los demás seres humanos, especialmente los de su entorno familiar.El único momento en el que Inés llega a sentir verdadero deseo físico, sexual y afectivo acerca de alguien no lo puede tener, pues el hombre que por fin despertó algún tipo de sentimiento en ella está esclavizado a una silla de ruedas, cuadripléjico, por lo que le resulta un imposible. Frente a su temperamento caprichoso y dominante, este hecho provoca una muy grande frustración en ella. ("Quien mucho desea lo que no puede poseer, está condenado a vivir eternamente en una parcela de frustración").La narración, como inicia, va concluyendo con el fin trágico de la hija de Inés: su muerte por ahogamiento. Y al no tener un sustituto real y aceptado por ella para ese único sentimiento de presunto amor, decide por la soledad. La soledad es la cura de sus males, después del giro de vida que le trae el fallecimiento de su hija.En el discurrir de la novela hay diferentes personajes y circunstancias que enriquecen el relato, el cual tiene un final, que aunque parece conocido desde el inicio, resulta inesperado.
