About the Book

Since the unearthing of the foundations of the Globe and Rose playhouses in London nearly two decades ago, the desire of theatre artists and scholars to build, study, and perform in reconstructions of Shakespearean playhouses has increased. This desire, which dates back at least to the late nineteenth-century discovery in the of the DeWitt drawing of London's Swan Playhouse, is perhaps best exemplified by the long-awaited completion and official opening of the International Shakespeare's Globe Centre in London in 1996. While the new Globe represents the first permanent reconstructed Elizabethan playhouse in England, a number of such buildings have been erected in the United States since the discovery of the Swan drawing. This study attempts to consider these American reconstructions as a group. Drawing on archival research and field studies of a number of reconstructions of Shakespearean playhouses, the author suggests connections among these theatres' rhetorical justifications, histories of use, and physical appearances. American reconstructions ranging in location from southern California to Massachusetts, from west Texas to Oregon, and dating from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries, are compared and considered as both architectural structures and places of performance. Using discourses drawn from performance studies and cultural geography, the study argues for the importance not only of the productions mounted in these playhouses, but of the meanings communicated by their broader geographical places. In the end, these places are found to be uniquely American. Deeply engaged with American ideas about authenticity and the ersatz, reconstructions of Shakespearean playhouses encourage a selective reception of history on the part of their audiences. In addition, successful reconstructions venerate Shakespeare through their creation of an identity for him set firmly in an American nature imagined to be endowed with divine goodness. In contrast to how they justify themselves, these structures are found to reveal as much about their own cultures and their own periods' view of theatrical performance as they do about Shakespeare's plays and his stagecraft.
