"El Corazón de Cristo en el Cielo hacia los Pecadores en la Tierra" fue publicado inicialmente en 1651. Pronto, se transformó en la obra más destacada de Thomas Goodwin (1600-1680). Thomas Goodwin (1600-1680) fue un teólogo y predicador puritano inglés. Nació en Norfolk, Inglaterra, como hijo mayor de Richard y Catherine Goodwin. A la edad de seis años, Goodwin, según sus propias palabras, "comenzó a tener algunos leves movimientos del Espíritu Santo". Asistió al Christ's College de Cambridge, y fue ordenado predicador en 1625 y conferenciante en la Trinity Church en 1633. En 1634 dimitió y en 1639 se vio obligado a huir a los Países Bajos para escapar de la persecución. Cuando Goodwin regresó a Inglaterra, se convirtió en miembro de la Asamblea de Westminster y predicó con frecuencia en el Parlamento. En 1656, también se convirtió en capellán de Oliver Cromwell. Junto con John Owen, Thomas Goodwin desempeñó un papel decisivo en la redacción de la Confesión de Westminster de 1658.
