Excerpt from Cornwall Parish Registers, Vol. 12: Marriages

The Bishop of St. Germans, in the charge delivered by him as Archdeacon of Cornwall in April last, gave a carefully prepared and succinct account of Parish Registers and their history. Those who are so fortunate as to possess a copy of his Lordship's charge would do well to preserve it for the purposes of reference, for it would be difficult within so small a compass to obtain a better digest of the subject. The words of encouragement and of appreciation which he bestowed upon the present series call for our dutiful acknow ledgments. We are grateful to him for calling attention to this work and for commending it to the notice of clergy and laity alike. It is a work which, as the Bishop pointed out in his charge, has gone steadily forward for nearly eight years, and yet shows no signs of deterioration or collapse. On the contrary, the Editors have every hope, so long as the measure of support is continued, that the useful work of printing all the Parish Registers will be brought to a successful conclusion. While it would be untrue to say that the issue of the twelve volumes has been unattended with anxiety and disappointment, it is a matter for con gratulation that there has been no opposition to the work, although some in its inception imagined there would be, and What difficulties there have been, have been passive rather than active. The clergy, to whose kindness we are indebted for permission to copy and print about marriages, have done what probably no other body of men would have done. They have not only tolerated but encouraged our frequent visits. They have dispensed hospitality freely and generously. They have placed their registers at our service. And they have done all this with a tact and a delicacy which has left us with the most pleasant recollections.

In the present volume are contained all the Gwinear marriages up to 1812, a collation of the published Gulval marriages with the Bodmin transcripts; also those mar riages solemnized at Madron, Morvah and Penzance which follow upon those recorded in the volume published by Mr. G. B. Millett in 1877. It seems, on the whole, more likely to meet the wishes of subscribers that the contents of this volume should Consist of matter which is entirely original than of matter some of which has already appeared in print, especially when it is remembered that both the Gulval Registers published by Messrs. W. Bolitho and G. B. Millett, and also the Madron volume referred to, can still be obtained. The present volume is smaller by a few pages than some of its predecessors owing to the difficulty of procuring a western parish with the requisite number of entries. In the next, which will probably consist of western parishes, it may be possible to make compensation for this. Subscribers will be glad to know that Mr. Charles F. Cole, of Meudon Vean, who copied the Mawnan entries, has finished Budock and has undertaken St. Gluvias for us. The Editors will be glad to welcome similar assistance in other parts of the county.
