Este libro es la crónica de la vida de una niña que nació en el año 1958 y vivió su niñez bajo el régimen comunista cubano, cuando triunfo la revolución que lidero Fidel Castro en Enero de 1959.
El primer capítulo habla de una Cuba oprimida y convulsionada bajo la presidencia de Fulgencio Batista que abusaba del pueblo cubano al mismo tiempo protegía los intereses norteamericanos y donde se escondía toda la basura de una sociedad corrupta,
Los cubanos vieron en el líder revolucionario el fin a los atropellos que se suscitaban en toda la isla de Cuba y le dieron todo el respaldo hasta que triunfo la revolución, finalmente Cuba se libera del gobierno Batistiano haciéndolo huir de la isla en medio de una fiesta de fin de año en el palacio presidencial.
Los cubanos celebran su victoria sintiéndose libres de la opresión de los Estados Unidos y vislumbrando un futuro de luz, atrás quedaba la obscuridad, sin saber que le estaban abriendo la puerta a algo mucho peor, donde poco a poco los cubanos fueron despertando a una nueva ideología, lo que nunca se imaginaron y de lo que nunca se habló. Aquella revolución fue la introducción del comunismo a las Américas.
El primer capítulo fue basado en las memorias de mis padres y familiares que me contaron sus vivencias de aquellos días antes durante y después de la transición del gobierno de Batista a la entrada triunfal de Fidel Castro y sus barbudos a la ciudad de la Habana. Mis primeros cinco años de vida son remembranzas de mis padres y vagos recuerdos de mis primeros años de infancia, a partir del segundo capítulo escribo con propiedad de los días felices de mi niñez en mi bella isla caribeña, aquellos fueron mis días de luz cuando mi inocencia hacía de mi entorno un lugar mágico lleno de amor y fantasías, pero a medida que voy creciendo me voy enfrentando a la obscuridad, y esos días obscuros terminaron por separar nuestra familia. Mi padre emigra a los Estados Unidos, y esto conlleva a muchos cambios en nuestras vidas que afectan mucho mi formación porque a menudo tenía que enfrentar abusos mentales de compañeros de escuela y de los mismos docentes solo porque mi padre se había ido de Cuba y nos estaba tratando de sacar del país por reunificación familiar. Los niños de la escuela nos decían que éramos "gusanos" que nos arrastrábamos a los pies de los americanos y causaban que viviéramos un ambiente de inquietud y desosiego, o sea momentos de obscuridad.
De esta forma cada capítulo va mostrando ya sea momentos de luz que son aquellos de la alegría que una niña de cualquier país sin importar su sistema debe vivir, y los momentos de obscuridad que son donde es testigo de los atropellos hacia el pueblo incluida su propia familia.
