Un des documents le plus souvent cités sur la religion celtique est un passage de César, De bello gallico, où le conquérant de la Gaule raconte quels sont, suivant lui, les principaux dieux des peuples qu'il a vaincus dans cette contrée: Le dieu qu'ils révèrent surtout est Mercure; ses statues sont nombreuses. Les Gaulois le considèrent comme l'inventeur de tous les arts, le guide dans les chemins et les voyages; ils lui attribuent une très grande influence sur les gains d'argent et sur le commerce. Après lui viennent Apollon, Mars, Jupiter et Minerve. De ceux-ci ils ont presque la même opinion que les autres nations: Apollon chasse les maladies; Minerve instruit les débutants dans les arts et les métiers; Jupiter a l'empire du ciel; Mars a celui de la guerre. Quant ils ont résolu de livrer bataille, ils lui consacrent d'avance par un voeu le butin qu'ils comptent faire Si nous prenons ce texte au pied de la lettre, il paraît que les Gaulois auraient eu cinq dieux presque identiques à autant de grands dieux romains: Mercure, Apollon, Mars, Jupiter et Minerve; la différence n'aurait guère consisté que dans les noms. Cette doctrine semble confirmée par des inscriptions romaines, où des noms gaulois sont juxtaposés comme épithètes ou par apposition aux noms de ces dieux romains.
About the Author: Marie-Henri d'Arbois de Jubainville, né à Nancy le 5 décembre 1827 et mort à Paris le 26 février 1910, est un historien, archiviste et celtologue français. Henri d'Arbois de Jubainville est en particulier à l'origine de l'explication, aujourd'hui bien connue, des toponymes gallo-romains en -(i)acum, théorie qu'il expose dans ses Recherches sur l'origine de la propriété foncière et des noms de lieux habités en France (voir Publications ci-dessous). Notons cependant que, s'il y voyait exclusivement dans ces toponymes des appellations formées sur des noms de propriétaires fonciers, explication reprise entre autres par Auguste Longnon puis Albert Dauzat et Marie-Thérèse Morlet, on tend aujourd'hui à admettre que les noms de lieux en -(i)acum puissent également être formés sur des noms communs (comme c'était le cas en gaulois, où le suffixe -acon n'avait qu'une valeur adjectivale). Ce changement relatif d'optique fut initié par Marc Bloch, et surtout développé par Michel Roblin dans sa thèse de doctorat sur le terroir de Paris aux époques gallo-romaine et franque. Si les travaux d'Arbois de Jubainville permettent une meilleure connaissance en France des textes mythologiques celtiques, leur esprit et leur méthode sont empreints, selon Christian-Joseph Guyonvarc'h, de leur époque. Ils sont notamment entachés de positivisme et d'historicisme .
