Cyrano de Bergerac est l'une des pièces les plus populaires du théâtre français, et la plus célèbre de son auteur, Edmond Rostand. Librement inspirée de la vie et de l'oeuvre de l'écrivain libertin Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655), elle est représentée pour la première fois le 28 décembre 1897, au Théâtre de la Porte-Saint-Martin, à Paris. La pièce est difficile à jouer: elle fait intervenir un grand nombre de personnages, elle est longue, le rôle titre est particulièrement imposant (plus de 1600 vers), les décors sont très différents d'un acte à l'autre et elle comporte une scène de bataille. Le succès en était si peu assuré qu'Edmond Rostand lui-même, redoutant un échec, se confondit en excuses auprès de l'acteur Coquelin, le jour de la générale, pour l'avoir entraîné dans une pareille aventure . La suite des évènements démentit les craintes de l'auteur: ce fut un triomphe; non seulement la représentation fut saluée par vingt minutes ininterrompues d'applaudissements, mais le ministre des Finances Georges Cochery vint dans la loge épingler sa propre Légion d'honneur sur la poitrine de l'auteur en expliquant: Je me permets de prendre un peu d'avance. Rostand reçut en effet officiellement la décoration quelques jours plus tard, le 1er janvier 1898. Le succès fut considérable, en France comme à l'étranger. Le personnage de Cyrano est devenu, dans la littérature française, un archétype humain au même titre qu'Hamlet ou Don Quichotte (auquel il tire son chapeau dans la pièce). Deux statues du personnage ont été érigées sur des places de Bergerac, en Dordogne, quoiqu'il n'existe aucun lien entre cette ville et le véritable Cyrano.
About the Author: Edmond Eugène Joseph Alexis Rostand, né à Marseille le 1er avril 1868 et mort à Paris, 7e, le 2 décembre 1918 (à 50 ans), est un écrivain, dramaturge, poète, et essayiste français. Edmond Rostand est l'auteur d'une des pièces les plus connues du théâtre français, Cyrano de Bergerac. Il est, par ailleurs, le père de l'écrivain, biologiste et académicien français Jean Rostand. Biographie Edmond Rostand naît le 1er avril 1868 dans une famille aisée de Marseille. Il est le fils de l'économiste Eugène Rostand, et l'arrière-petit-fils d'Alexis-Joseph Rostand (1769-1854), un maire de Marseille. En 1880, son père mène toute sa famille, Edmond, sa mère et ses deux cousines, dans la station thermale en vogue de Bagnères-de-Luchon. Hébergés d'abord dans le chalet Spont, puis dans la villa Devalz, ils font ensuite édifier la villa Julia, à proximité du casino. Edmond Rostand passe plus de vingt-deux étés à Luchon, qui lui inspire ses premières oeuvres. Il y écrit notamment une pièce de théâtre en 1888, Le Gant rouge, et surtout un volume de poésie en 1890, Les Musardises. C'est dans cette station thermale et touristique qu'Edmond Rostand se lie d'amitié avec un homme de lettres luchonais, Henry de Gorsse avec lequel il partagea le goût pour la littérature.
